Join Trio Farben for the first of two lunchtime concerts, as part of their Chamber Music in Residence with Britten Pears Arts, kindly supported by the H Steven and P E Wood Trust. Reflective music for flute, viola, and harp by Bax and Ravel is combined with Saariaho’s New Gates and a recent work by Imogen Davey.
Each movement of Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin was written in memory of a friend of the composer who had died in World War I, while Bax wrote his Elegiac Trio in the aftermath of the Easter Rising of 1916. They are combined with Saariaho’s New Gates, music which sounds as if it’s moving towards gates, opening them, and showing us new landscapes beyond – and with Imogen Davey’s STRATA, written for Trio Farben.
Bax:
Elegiac Trio (9’)
Saariaho:
New Gates (13’)
Imogen Davey:
STRATA (Lamination 1, Bedding Planes, Lamination 2) (14’)
Ravel, arr. Skaila Kanga:
Le tombeau de Couperin (Prélude, Menuet, Rigaudon) (13’)
